Clearing a cache can remove temporary files that an app can rebuild, but similar-looking buttons may erase sign-ins, downloaded resources or a locally stored game save. Before tapping anything, identify the exact control and confirm how the game protects progress. The safest order is account check, official repair tool, cache cleanup, and only then more destructive steps.
Protect the account before troubleshooting
Open the game’s official account settings while it still launches. Verify a supported sign-in link and record the non-secret player ID, server and region. A nickname, receipt or phone backup does not automatically prove that a guest save is recoverable.
If progress is unbound or the game cannot confirm a cloud account, stop before clearing storage, deleting the app or reinstalling it. Contact the publisher through its official website or store listing. Never send support a password, one-time code or recovery link.
Try the game’s own repair or resource check
Many large games include an official repair, verify files, clear downloaded resources or redownload assets option on the title screen. Read its description carefully: a resource repair may preserve the account while downloading several gigabytes again, but labels and behavior differ by game.
Capture the exact error first, then check official maintenance notices. Restart the phone and test a stable connection before deleting anything. A server outage or full storage can look like damaged cache, and repeated repair attempts waste prepaid data.
Android: Clear cache is not Clear storage
Google’s Android Help says Clear cache deletes temporary data and the app may be slower the next time it opens. Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Manufacturer menus vary, but the usual route is Settings, Apps, the game, then Storage & cache.
Use Clear cache first, reopen the game and allow official assets to rebuild. Do not tap Clear storage just because it is beside the cache button. It can remove local files and sign-in state. Avoid cleaner apps asking for Accessibility, VPN or device-administrator access.
iPhone and iPad: check storage options carefully
iOS does not provide one universal Clear cache button for every game. A developer may offer an in-game resource cleanup. Apple’s iPhone Storage screen instead distinguishes Offload App, which removes the app but keeps documents and data, from Delete App, which removes the app and related data.
Offloading is not a guarantee that an unbound game save is safe, and reinstalling still requires the app to remain available in the store. Verify the account first. Remove unrelated downloads or offload a replaceable app before touching the game itself.
When a full reinstall is justified
- Confirm the account link and recovery method.
- Record the current version, player ID and exact error.
- Check the publisher’s status and support notice.
- Make sure enough storage and trusted Wi-Fi are available.
- Delete and reinstall only from Google Play or the App Store.
- Sign in and confirm progress before removing any backup notes.
If the issue began immediately after an update, use the post-update crash checklist before reinstalling. Clearing cache is a targeted troubleshooting step, not routine maintenance, and rebuilt cache will use storage again.
