Fake game giveaways often imitate a publisher, streamer, esports team or store and promise skins, currency, gift cards or tournament prizes. The Philippine Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center identifies prize or reward scams as messages claiming a win from a contest you did not legitimately join, or asking you to click a link to collect points or rewards.
Check whether the event exists
Open the official game website, in-game News panel or verified store listing independently. Search for the exact event name, eligibility, region, dates and organizer. A Philippine flag, peso amount or familiar influencer image does not prove that an offer is local or authorized.
Be suspicious if you never entered the contest, the deadline is only a few minutes away, comments are disabled or the account was created recently. CICC’s Kontra Scam material specifically flags unexpected prizes and reward links.
Inspect the claim method
Legitimate redemption normally happens inside the official game, official store or a publisher domain linked from those locations. A lookalike page may change one letter, add extra words or use a free form service. Do not trust a padlock alone; it only means the connection is encrypted, not that the site is genuine.
Never install a “reward app,” modified APK, configuration profile or browser extension to claim a prize. Do not turn off Play Protect or grant Accessibility, device-administrator, VPN or screen-control permission. A code generator that asks for a login is not an official tool.
Do not pay to unlock a prize
Scammers may request a small “verification,” “tax,” delivery or conversion fee through GCash, bank transfer, crypto or gift card. Stop. Confirm any legitimate charge in published contest terms and through the organizer’s official support channel, not the contact who sent the message.
Do not share a gift-card code or full purchase receipt. Apple notes that gift-card scams often create urgency, direct the victim through the purchase process and then demand the redemption code.
Protect linked Google and Apple accounts
A fake claim page may target the Google or Apple account used by several games. Google advises users not to share passwords, to avoid suspicious links and to review Security Checkup. An unexpected verification code should be deleted and never shared.
Apple advises changing the Apple Account password immediately if information was entered on a scam site. Deny unknown sign-in prompts, review signed-in devices and remove unfamiliar sessions. Then check the game account, purchase history and linked payment methods.
If money or account access was lost
Save the message, profile, URL, transaction reference and time without continuing the conversation. Contact the payment provider through its official app or published support channel and ask about the available fraud process. Report the impersonating profile to the social platform and notify the game publisher.
