A large mobile game may download normally while the store is open, then appear stalled after the display locks. That does not automatically mean the phone is broken. Data-saving rules, a weak connection, insufficient working space, a pending store prompt or the operating system’s background limits can all change what happens.
First identify what actually paused
Wake the phone and open the official Google Play or App Store page. Check whether the store says pending, paused, waiting, installing or open. A base app may be installed while an in-game asset pack is still downloading, so also open the official game once and read its own status.
Do not compare progress percentages from two different stages. The store package, installation and post-launch assets use separate counters. Take one screenshot for your own reference, then wait a few minutes on a stable connection before repeatedly canceling and restarting.
Check connection and free space before changing settings
Google’s official download troubleshooting starts with a strong Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and available storage. Google notes that low space can stop downloads; temporary installation work can also require more room than the listed package. Keep the phone on reliable power without letting it overheat, and avoid moving between Wi-Fi and cellular during the same attempt.
If another large app downloads normally, the issue may be limited to one title or its compatibility. If every store download stalls, restart the phone and check the store service before touching the game’s data.
Android: inspect Data Saver and Play Store access
Google explains that Data Saver can limit background data and that Google Play may need unrestricted data access when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Review Network and Internet, Data Saver and the Play Store’s background-data permission. Only grant unrestricted data if you accept the possible cellular cost.
Also check whether Play Store is waiting for Wi-Fi, account approval or a system update. Do not disable Play Protect or install a separate APK to bypass a paused official download. If basic checks fail, use Google’s app-download troubleshooting in order instead of clearing multiple services at once.
iPhone and iPad: check Low Data Mode and the download tile
Apple says Low Data Mode reduces background network use and turns off automatic downloads. If you intentionally enabled it, keep it on unless you are ready for the data use. On the Home Screen, touch and hold the downloading app; Apple provides a Prioritize Download option for supported cases.
Apple’s official checklist also includes manually updating, resolving a billing verification message and restarting the device. A free app can still be blocked by an account or payment verification issue, so read the exact App Store message rather than repeatedly entering credentials into pop-ups outside the store.
Use a controlled retry
- Confirm the official store page and developer.
- Record the current progress and check free space.
- Use one stable network and disable VPN or traffic-filtering tools temporarily only if you trust the network.
- Open the store, resume once and keep the phone awake for ten minutes.
- If it still stalls, restart and retry through the official store.
Before deleting a partly installed game, confirm whether existing progress is linked. The update working-space guide explains why a package can need substantially more temporary room than its advertised size.
Stop if the workaround asks for trust
Do not install a modified APK, enterprise certificate, configuration profile, device-management enrollment or remote-control app to finish a download. A legitimate developer may ask for the store, game version, device model and error text; it should not need your store password, one-time code or wallet PIN.
