Battery Saver on Android and Low Power Mode on iPhone can help a phone last longer, but they may also change the conditions under which a mobile game runs. If frame rate falls, an update pauses or a game reconnects after you switch apps, check the phone’s power mode before reinstalling or installing a so-called booster.

There is no universal best setting. A turn-based game may work perfectly in a power-saving mode, while a fast competitive game may feel less responsive. Test the same scene with only one setting changed.

What iPhone Low Power Mode changes

Apple says Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting or disabling some features. Current Apple guidance lists lower display brightness, reduced visual effects, disabled Background App Refresh and automatic downloads, and a display refresh-rate limit of up to 60 Hz on devices with ProMotion. Apple also notes that some tasks may run more slowly.

A game can still target its own frame rate, but the display and system power policy set the environment around it. If a 90 or 120 fps option suddenly feels capped, check whether the battery icon is yellow and whether Low Power Mode is active before changing every in-game option.

What Android Battery Saver may change

Android behavior varies by manufacturer. Google’s Pixel guidance says Standard Battery Saver restricts background work, can delay low-priority notifications, turns off Smooth Display on supported models and may move a supported 5G phone to 4G. Extreme Battery Saver additionally pauses most apps and slows processing.

Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo and other phones use different menu names and may add their own gaming or power profiles. Follow the device maker’s current help page. Do not copy a hidden-menu or developer-option recipe from an unrelated phone model.

Run a controlled test

  1. Save progress and close any ranked or time-limited match.
  2. Note the battery level, temperature, network and current game graphics settings.
  3. Play the same training area for a few minutes with the power-saving mode on.
  4. Turn the mode off, let the phone cool if needed and repeat under the same conditions.
  5. Compare frame pacing, touch response, reconnects and battery drain—not just the FPS counter.

Change only the power mode first. If you also switch Wi-Fi, graphics, charger and screen brightness at the same time, the result will not identify the cause.

When to keep the mode on

  • A turn-based or idle game remains responsive and the extra battery time matters.
  • You are reading menus, organizing inventory or doing low-intensity tasks.
  • The phone is not receiving delayed login or event notifications you depend on.

If the mode makes no noticeable difference to play, leaving it enabled may be reasonable. Still watch temperature: saving battery does not make charging under heat automatically safe.

When to turn it off temporarily

  • A competitive match becomes choppy or the display no longer uses its expected refresh rate.
  • A game must finish a large official resource download or update.
  • Background voice, sign-in or reconnect behavior fails only while the mode is active.

Turn the mode back on after the task if battery life is more important. Do not permanently exempt many apps from battery optimization without evidence; unrestricted background activity can increase drain and heat.

Power mode is not a cure for overheating

If performance starts well and drops after several minutes, heat may be the larger cause. Remove an insulating case if the manufacturer allows it, stop charging and recording, move out of direct sun and let the phone cool. Our FPS drop and heat guide provides a separate test order.

Never install an unknown battery saver, RAM cleaner or graphics unlocker. Android and iOS already manage app memory and power; a third-party tool cannot add physical cooling or guarantee more frames.
