A mobile game may ask you to choose between a local save on the phone and a cloud save linked to an account. The dangerous response is to tap the newest-looking button without checking. Selecting one copy may upload it over the other, and a timestamp alone does not prove which save contains the furthest progress.
Pause before choosing
Take screenshots of the full prompt, both timestamps, player name, level, server and any displayed currency. Keep the app open if possible, but do not repeatedly switch accounts, clear data or reinstall. If the game offers Cancel, Later or a back button, use it while you investigate.
Do not play several new stages on either copy just to test it. New activity can create another sync event and make the conflict harder to reconstruct.
Identify what each save represents
- Local save: data currently stored on this device; it may be newer but not yet uploaded.
- Cloud save: data associated with Game Center, Google Play Games or the publisher’s own login.
- Server account: an online profile whose progress may be controlled by the publisher rather than the phone backup.
- Guest profile: progress that may exist only on one installation unless the game explicitly supports transfer.
These labels vary by game. Read the current support article for that title before assuming that iCloud, Google backup or a store login contains the live game state.
Compare more than the timestamp
Check the player ID, region or server, chapter, level, last unlocked character and approximate currency. A cloud save can have a later timestamp because an older profile opened briefly. A local save can have a later timestamp because the phone clock was wrong or because it contains only a newly created guest profile.
Confirm automatic date and time on the phone, then translate both timestamps into the same time zone. If you recently traveled, remember that one screen may display UTC while another uses local time.
Checks for Android
Google says only some games automatically save through Google Play Games. For a supported game, open its achievements or leaderboards screen and check the profile image to see which Google account is active. Phones with several Google accounts can silently open a different Play Games identity.
Google also warns that changing the default sign-in account for all games may split or hide progress. Do not delete Play Games data: Google says that, depending on the developer’s implementation, deleting a game profile or game data may remove achievements or progress.
Checks for iPhone and iPad
Apple says supported games can keep progress current through iCloud and Game Center. Check that iCloud and Game Center use the same Apple Account on each device. A family member’s Game Center profile or a different Apple Account can make the expected save appear missing.
Do not sign out of iCloud, erase the device or restore a full phone backup merely to solve one game’s prompt. First check the game’s publisher instructions and confirm that it actually uses Apple’s sync services.
Choose only when the evidence agrees
- Confirm the intended player ID and server.
- Match meaningful progress such as chapter, roster and purchases.
- Check which account is linked to each copy.
- Compare timestamps in the same time zone.
- Read the prompt carefully for words such as upload, replace or overwrite.
- Choose only after the identity and progress point to the same save.
If the evidence conflicts, stop and contact the developer from the official store listing. Provide screenshots, device models, operating systems, app versions, player ID and the time each device was last used. Do not publish the screenshots if they contain email addresses or order numbers.
After the correct save opens
Verify several independent details before playing: player name, server, chapter, characters, settings and purchase history. Let the game finish any sync indicator on a stable connection. Then close and reopen it once to confirm that the same progress returns.
Keep the old device and installation untouched until the new device has opened the right profile more than once. If purchases are missing while progress is correct, treat that as a separate billing issue and use the official purchase restoration checklist.
Never use an account-recovery stranger
A person who asks for a password, one-time code, QR login, recovery link or remote-control session cannot safely resolve a save conflict. Use the publisher’s official support route and send only non-secret identifiers plus redacted evidence.
