A mobile game update may appear on one phone while another still shows Play or Open. That difference does not automatically mean the second phone is broken. Developers can release gradually, stores can show different builds by account or region, and a device may no longer meet the new compatibility rules.
First, do not sideload the version number
Do not install an APK or configuration profile merely because another player has a higher build. A file with the expected version number can still be modified, signed by someone else or intended for a different region or device. Keep the current installation until progress and the sign-in method are confirmed.
Also avoid clearing game data as a first step. A local guest save, downloaded resources or authentication state may be removed. Take a screenshot of the player ID and current version, verify the linked account and note whether the game still launches.
Why two Android phones can differ
Google’s Play Console documentation allows a developer to use a staged rollout that reaches only a percentage of users. Eligible users are selected for that release, and it can take time for the full group to receive it. A rollout can also target selected countries.
Google Play can additionally make compatibility decisions for the exact device, Android version and signed-in account. Two phones with the same brand may have different model variants, software versions, Play certification or account countries.
- Open Play Store and search for the game directly.
- Confirm the correct Google account and official developer.
- Open the game’s details page and look for Update.
- Use Manage apps & device to check pending updates.
- Restart the phone once if the store appears stale.
Google notes that some updates require a restart and that a sign-in error can stop automatic updates. Do not repeatedly clear Play Store or game storage before checking the account and save.
Why two iPhones or iPads can differ
On iPhone or iPad, open App Store, tap the account photo, then open App Updates and refresh the list. Apple says App Store apps normally update automatically, but they can also be updated manually from this screen.
Compare the Apple Account, App Store country or region, iOS version and device model. A publisher can raise the minimum OS or stop supporting older hardware. If the listing still opens but no update is offered, record the displayed version and wait for the official rollout or ask the publisher rather than installing through an unknown link.
Check whether the update is actually mandatory
If the game still opens and allows normal play, the newer build may not yet be required for that device. If the game displays a mandatory-update screen but the store offers no update, capture both screens, the device model, OS, current build and store account region. That evidence is more useful to support than repeated reinstalls.
During cross-platform play, friends can temporarily show different client builds. Avoid ranked matches or purchases if the publisher warns that maintenance or a mandatory update is in progress.
Safe order of fixes
- Confirm the save and recoverable sign-in method.
- Check the publisher’s official announcement or status page.
- Open the official store listing directly.
- Confirm account country, device OS and free space.
- Restart the store and phone.
- Wait if a staged rollout or maintenance window is documented.
- Contact official support with screenshots if the mismatch persists.
If the store says the game is no longer compatible, use our device-compatibility checklist. If the update is visible but loops or stalls, follow the safe update-loop guide.
