A mobile game can appear to reset when it signs in with the wrong Google Play Games profile or Game Center account. The old save may still exist under the identity used before. Pause before completing a tutorial, making a purchase, deleting data or accepting a cloud-save replacement.

Recognize an account mismatch

Common signs include a new gamer name, missing achievements, an empty friends list, an unfamiliar avatar or progress beginning at level one. A publisher login shown inside the game may also differ from the platform profile shown by Android or iPhone.

Do not assume that the save was deleted. Google warns that changing the Play Games profile used by a game may load different progress and settings; returning to the previous profile can restore the earlier state. Apple similarly requires the same Apple Account for iCloud and Game Center when a supported game’s progress is missing on another device.

Stop before making changes

  • Do not play far enough to trigger a new cloud upload.
  • Do not spend money on the empty or unfamiliar profile.
  • Do not clear app data, uninstall or factory-reset the phone.
  • Do not delete Play Games data or a Game Center relationship.
  • Do not accept a prompt that says local or cloud progress will be replaced until both saves are identified.

Take a screenshot of the unexpected profile, the time, device and game version. Keep player IDs and account addresses private.

Check Play Games on Android

  1. Open Android Settings and choose Google.
  2. Open All services, then Settings for Google apps and Play Games.
  3. Choose the sign-in account or account-for-games setting.
  4. Find the affected game and compare the selected profile with the one used before.
  5. Choose the correct profile, save the change and reopen the game.

Google also supports a quick profile switcher for certain games when multiple Google Accounts are present. Menu wording varies by Android version. Changing the Play Store purchasing account is not automatically the same as changing the Play Games profile.

Check Game Center on iPhone or iPad

Open Settings and choose Game Center to see the signed-in Apple Account and nickname. Apple says supported progress relies on iCloud and Game Center using the same Apple Account across devices. Compare the address with the older device before signing out.

On a shared device, also confirm the active Apple user and App Store account. Do not sign another person out or remove their data without permission. If the expected account is unavailable, use Apple’s official recovery process rather than a third-party unlock service.

Separate platform identity from publisher identity

Play Games and Game Center do not control every mobile game’s save. A title may instead use a publisher account, Facebook, email, an Apple sign-in or a guest profile. Open the official game’s account screen and identify every connected service before changing one of them.

A correct platform avatar with the wrong in-game account still requires publisher support. Likewise, switching the platform profile cannot recover anonymous progress that was never linked. Check the game’s official support page for its exact save model.

If the old profile returns

Verify the level, inventory and purchase history before continuing. Record the non-secret player ID and, where supported, add a second recovery method. Restart once more so you know the same profile loads consistently.

If progress remains missing, contact the developer from the official store listing or in-game support. Provide the old player ID, device model, OS, version and approximate last successful login. Do not share passwords, one-time codes or unredacted payment details.

Avoid destructive account tools

Google says deleting Play Games data may also delete achievements or progress depending on the developer’s implementation. Treat deletion as a last resort after the correct account and save are confirmed. On Apple devices, changing Game Center accounts can make supported saves appear different even when the data still exists elsewhere.

Our local-versus-cloud save guide covers the separate case where both save slots are visible.
